Movie Review: 'The Dictator' Is Likeable - Johns Creek, GA Patch

From the guy who brought us Ali G and Borat comes a new character named General Aladeen ? a ruthless dictator from a fictional country in North Africa who is part buffoon, horn dog and ruthless bloodthirsty ruler in "The Dictator."

Through a ridiculous set of circumstances, that I will spare you the details because they are so contrived, Aladeen ends up in New York while his even sillier double is in charge of his country.

There are plenty of cameo appearances from big stars to keep things interesting. As for the element of political satire we get a pretty heavy-handed lecture that borders on being a bit corny. "The Dictator," ?like so many other characters by Cohen, is offensive but somehow there is a certain likeability to him.

"The Dictator" is one tasteless gag after another ? from playing the Munich Olympic games on Wii to having a massive misunderstanding of 9-11; there is plenty to choose from. The extended birthing scene, however, lowers the bar in shock humor; that was really bad. That all being noted, it's still pretty funny, if you like this kind of thing.

The Flick-O-Meter gives "The Dictator" a three out of five. It is kind of like watching a live-action cartoon. And if you look at it from that perspective, it's not so bad.

Get social, we are on Facebook; go to TheBrettSide and click Like.

"The Dictator" opens this weekend at Regal Cinemas Medlock in Johns Creek.

Amber Portwood Hanging On By A Thread

Amber Portwood is probably on a first name basis with some of the bailiff in the Madison County, Indiana courthouse by now. This girl doesn?t know how to stay out of trouble. After going through treatment for minor mental health issues, landing in jail over domestic violence charges, and now apparently messing up her drug treatment program, the former Teen Mom star is lucky to be seeing the light of day. Just this week, it seems like she was given her last and final chance. According to TMZ, a judge has once again let her out ? even after failing to show up for a drug court appearance. At first, she was actually put in jail, which was totally shocking, but now she is out again. But, why? Well the judge decided to give her a shot at home detention, but put a major threat over her head. If she screws up this time around, she could actually be forced to go back into the drug court program and maybe even spend five years behind bars. That sentence would be even longer than she?s been a celeb for, wouldn?t it? I just can?t believe how lucky she is. She was [...]

Report: Nearly 10% of inmates suffer sexual abuse

featurepics.com stock

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

Nearly one in 10?prisoners suffer sexual abuse?while incarcerated in state prisons, local jails and post-release treatment facilities, according to a report published Thursday by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The report, based on the first National Former Prisoners Survey, includes data from 518,800 former prisoners who were on supervised parole in mid-2008.

An estimated 3.7 percent?said they were forced or pressured to have nonconsensual sex with another inmate. About 5.3 percent reported an incident that involved facility staff.

The report?s publication coincides with the Justice Department's release of landmark federal standards to protect inmates in all?federal, state and local facilities, under the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003.

"For too long, incidents of sexual abuse against incarcerated persons have not been taken as seriously as sexual abuse outside prison walls," the Justice Department said in a statement on the standards. "In popular culture, prison rape is often the subject of jokes; in public discourse, it has been at times dismissed by some as an inevitable ? or even deserved ? consequence of criminality."

A quarter of those who reported?they had suffered unwanted sexual contact at the hands of other inmates said they had been physically held down or restrained and a quarter had been physically harmed or injured. Nearly a quarter (23 percent) reported serious injuries, including anal/vaginal tearing (12 percent), chipped or lost teeth (12 percent), being knocked unconscious (8 percent), internal injuries (6 percent), knife/stab wounds (4 percent) or broken bones (4 percent), according to the?survey of former prisoners.

Although any sexual contact between staff and inmates is legally nonconsensual, former prisoners said some incidents were unwilling and some were "willing."

Most victims of staff sexual misconduct reported some type of coercion. Half said they had been offered favors or special privileges and a third said they had been talked into it. Nearly 7 in 8 in this category reported only perpetrators of the opposite sex. More than three-quarters of all reported staff sexual misconduct involved a male inmate with female staff.

The rate of victimization by other inmates was reported by homosexual (39 percent) and bisexual male inmates (34 percent) at rates about 10 times higher than those reported by heterosexual males (3.5 percent).

In other findings, the report said inmates of two or more races (11.3 percent) and black non-Hispanics (6.5 percent) suffered sexual victimization at rates higher than white non-Hispanic inmates (4.5 percent) and Hispanic inmates (4 percent).

The survey was part of the Bureau of Justice Statistics National Prison Rape Statistics Program, which has collected?administrative records of reported sexual violence or allegations of sexual victimization directly from victims since 2004.

The new standards require an array of measures to prevent and handle sexual abuse involving?prisoners, including additional staff training, grievance reporting systems, increased staff and video monitoring, prompt medical and psychological attention for victims, and disciplinary actions for staff or inmate perpetrators.

"The standards we establish today reflect the fact that sexual assault crimes committed within our correctional facilities can have devastating consequences ? for individual victims and for communities far beyond our jails and prisons,"?Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement.

The standards will go into effect for federal facilities in 60 days.?States that do not comply or demonstrate that they are working toward complying with the standards face the loss of relevant federal funds.

In drafting the standards, the?Justice Department was prohibited from placing an undue financial burden on the states. It collected public comment, and haggled with officials from states, a wide array of advocacy?groups and other stakeholders, a department official said, explaining why the standards were instituted nine years after the law was passed.

"These standards are the result of a thoughtful and deliberative process ? and represent a critical step forward in protecting the rights and safety of all Americans,"?Holder said.

Md. town extends hand to G-8 demonstrators

THURMONT, Md. (AP) ? Ethiopian expatriates, unmanned drone replicas and an anti-nuclear Buddhist monk are heading to the Maryland mountain town of Thurmont in hopes of influencing world leaders at a global economic summit at nearby Camp David on Friday and Saturday.

They'll join dozens, and perhaps hundreds, of demonstrators from East Coast occupy movements who plan to fill the sidewalks and the airwaves with messages protesting the bailout of U.S. banks and other large corporations.

Police aim to keep the demonstrators at least four miles from the presidential retreat in Catoctin Mountain Park where top officials from the Group of Eight leading industrial nations are meeting.

Merchants in the town of 6,200 have spruced up their stores and stocked their shelves in anticipation of visitors doing some shopping and dining between marching and chanting.

"As long as we treat them with a welcoming and respectful attitude, they'll treat us the same way ? at least that's what my hope is," said Virginia LaRoche, owner of Timeless Trends Boutique on Main Street.

Some past G-8 meetings have been accompanied by large and sometimes violent protests.

This year's G-8 Summit had been set for Chicago, just before a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit. The Obama administration moved the economic meeting to Camp David, but denied speculation that the sessions were moved for security reasons.

International events at the presidential retreat are part of Thurmont's history, and town officials are encouraging residents to embrace rather than fear the summit. Flags of the participating nations ? Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Britain and United States ? are displayed in a downtown park planted with red, white and blue flowers.

Beneath the flags, a community bulletin board displays news clippings from the Middle East peace talks at Camp David in 1978 and 2000.

At the Cozy, an 80-year-old country inn favored by the press corps, a Camp David museum showcases the town's connection to historic events.

Pat Ridenour, co-owner of the Thurmont Kountry Kitchen, aims to sell lots of French onion and Maryland crab soup, and homemade fudge.

"I hope we do get as busy as everyone thinks we're going to get," she said.

The welcoming attitude contrasts with security measures the Secret Service and local police have been planning for months. Catoctin Mountain Park, a National Park Service property, is closed during the summit, as is neighboring Cunningham Falls State Park. Much of Route 77, which winds between the parks, is closed to all but local traffic.

The travel restrictions have put a crimp in Saturday's annual mother-daughter dinner at Pioneer Baptist Church in Thurmont.

"We did have a few that were concerned and said they weren't going to make an attempt," said Pastor James Coblentz.

But Thurmont resident Amy Blickenstaff, who uses Route 77 to visit her mother in unincorporated Foxville, said the road closure is a minor inconvenience in light of the important events at Camp David.

"The world leaders can come together," she said. "We're the ones that have the ability to make the world a better place."

A better world is also the goal of Toyoshige Sekiguchi, a Japanese Buddhist monk who walked from Pittsburgh to Thurmont, chanting and beating a prayer drum, to publicize his plea to the G-8 to abolish nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants.

Ethiopian national Kebadu Belachew of Washington said he hopes to bring several busloads of people from the city's Ethiopian community to Thurmont on Saturday to protest the policies of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. The Ethiopian prime minister is invited to the summit for food security talks.

And the Know Drones Tour plans to bring 11-foot replicas of the unmanned aircraft to Thurmont to protest America's use of drones against terrorism suspects. Critics say drones are also being used for surveillance of the American public. They say drones turn the entire planet into a battlefield.

Members of Occupy Baltimore, lead organizer for the demonstrations, say they don't expect to get anywhere near Camp David and plan to focus instead on the news media in town.

"There'll be lots of international press there to talk to and I think the word will get out," said Dick Ochs, a retired Baltimore printer.

Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins said he's not expecting any trouble from the demonstrators, who also have events planned in Frederick, 15 miles south of Thurmont.

"I think their intentions are strictly to demonstrate and wave signs and chant and maybe stand along the road and make their statements and move on," he said.

Best Florida Real Estate Markets For 2012

The real estate market is coming back around after years of getting hammered, and the markets leading this recovery are the very ones that were damaged most by the collapse. Florida was one of the hardest hit states when the real estate market tanked, but now things are looking much better in the sunshine state. I'll start with the disclaimer, though, that certainly not every market in Florida is worth investing in. To help investors, I've put together a little list of the best Florida real estate markets for 2012. Keep in mind that this is not a list of the best places to live in Florida, but rather a list of what I believe to be the best places for investors to buy real estate in Florida this year. The following locations are not ranked in any particular order.

Fort Myers

As with the other real estate markets on this list, the Fort Myers area was hit especially hard when the real estate bubble exploded. Real estate prices in the area fell nearly 60% off their peak, and foreclosures were rampant. It has taken several years, but the area has finally turned the corner. Here are some market insights for Fort Myers that has lead me to my conclusion:

  • The job market is recovering. Over the past year, unemployment has fallen from 12.7 percent, to 10.2 percent, according to an article from News-Press.
  • The population is growing. From 2000 to 2010, according to US Census data, the population in Fort Myers has grown 29.2 percent.

Real estate market specific facts (according to Movoto.com):

  • Available inventory has fallen 30%
  • The percentage of distressed properties is falling
  • The median days on market has fallen by over 20 days in the past year
  • In 2011, real estate prices increased almost 21% according to Inman News

It is also much cheaper to buy a house in Fort Myers than it is to rent one. For this exercise, I went to Zillow.com, clicked on a few listings, and compared the estimated mortgage cost to the Rent Zestimate for the homes. Looking at these numbers, you are able to get a pretty good idea that buying is much cheaper than renting in Fort Myers right now. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that you will need to add on some extra padding to the mortgage number for things like, maintenance, insurance, HOA dues and so on. These are things that you wouldn?t have to pay if you rented the property. In this case, the numbers aren?t even close, but sometimes that will make the difference.

After reviewing the data for Fort Myers, we clearly see a market that was considerably oversold after its collapse. Fort Myers is already on its way to recovering as we speak, and many investors will be making a lot of money as a result.

Miami

During the housing bubble builders went nuts in Miami - especially condo developers. There was a tremendous amount of inventory created, and the demand from end users for these properties simply did not support the amount of units being built. Naturally that lead to a glut of supply, and prices fell. Well, after the bubble popped development basically ceased, and the market was finally given a chance to absorb the excess supply. Things are looking a lot rosier for Miami's real estate market now. Here are some things that Miami has going for it:

  • World renown city which attracts international as well as domestic buyers
  • Large population base - easier to find tenants
  • Inventory is falling: "from March 2011, the inventory of residential listings in Miami-Dade County has decreased 34% from 18,883 to 12,379 in March 2012," according to the Miami Association of Realtors.
  • Prices are increasing: "In March, the average sales price for single family homes in Miami-Dade County increased 21.8% from $279,608 in 2011 to $340,634 in 2012. The average sales prices for condominiums jumped 23% from $212,616 to $261,523," according to the Miami Association of Realtors.
  • HousingPredictor.com ranked Miami as the #1 real estate market in the entire country for 2012.

The Miami real estate market is back with a vengeance, and 2012 should be a great year for the Miami real estate market.

Orlando

Just like with the other two markets we already covered, the Orlando market was hit hard when the bubble collapsed. Builders overbuilt, investors over speculated, foreclosures were rampant - nothing really new there. The start of 2012 has been good to Orlando, though - with prices up nearly 13% over last year - and that trend should continue.

The real beauty of the Orlando real estate market, is that thanks to Walt Disney World - and all the various other theme parks - the area is the #1 tourist destination in the United States. For investors, that means - assuming you buy a property in a decent location - there are two potential tenant streams (vacationers and long term renters). Here are some more market facts for Orlando:

  • Inventory is down 31% according to the Orlando Association of Realtors
  • Prices are up nearly 13% according to the Orlando Association of Realtors
  • over 51 million tourists visited Orlando in 2010, up 10.5% from 2009

The Orlando real estate market has a lot to offer investors, and the market should have a great year as the economy continues to rebound.

Conclusion?

The real estate market is turning the corner - especially in Florida - and it's time for investors to get back on the bus. I know it is scary to think about investing in markets like Florida which fell so far only a few years back. Just remember, the only reason these incredible opportunities exist today is because the market severely over-corrected. ?Investing at the pre-collapse pricing down in these Florida real estate markets didn't make sense - today it does. I'm so confident in the real estate markets down here in Florida, that I'm putting my money where my mouth is. My company, Hanover Companies, has already purchased five developments in Florida, and we are still looking for more. ?
