Obama offers his World Series prediction

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is offering his prediction for the upcoming World Series.

Obama says during a campaign stop in Virginia that he is "looking forward to a White Sox-Nationals World Series." The president says, "It's going to happen."

The former Illinois senator is a longtime Chicago White Sox baseball fan. The president congratulated supporters in the Virginia suburbs of Washington the day after the Washington Nationals clinched a playoff berth. The White Sox are currently in first place in the American League Central.

Obama spoke at Pfitzner Stadium, home of the minor league Potomac Nationals, a minor league affiliate of the Nationals.

Netgear

Today, Netgear is unveiling three more Roku-troubling NeoTV boxes and Push2TV, a wireless display adapter letting you harness WiDi or Miracast to push content from smartphones, laptops or tablets to your TV. The trio of NeoTVs are so similar to the last generation that it's a little hard to tell the difference, except that the new flagship NeoTV MAX now comes with the long-desired addition of DLNA and a custom remote that has navigation buttons on one side and a QWERTY keyboard on the other. All four devices are available from today, the Push2Tv costing $60, while the new NeoTVs are priced at $50, $60 and $70, respectively -- and if you'd like to know more, then we've got some more info down below.

Microsoft permanently patches critical IE hole

3 hrs.

Days?after Microsoft learned of a nasty Internet Explorer flaw that malware writers had already begun to exploit, the company pushed out a permanent software patch.

"This security update is rated Critical for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9 on Windows clients and Moderate for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9 on Windows servers," a Microsoft security bulletin published Friday?read.

The flaw left Internet Explorer users vulnerable to drive-by downloads and affected all currently supported versions of Windows.

Windows 8, due to be released to the general public Oct. 26, and its accompanying browser, Internet Explorer 10, are not affected.

Windows users who have automatic updating turned on will get the patch without any effort. For those who don't, Microsoft urges them to deploy Windows Update manually.

Microsoft posted "fix it" workaround software Wednesday that temporarily deactivated the flaw. Friday's permanent patch overrides the "fix it," which does not itself need to be disabled or uninstalled before the patch is installed.

Part 1: 10 Things Non-Fiction Authors Can Do to ... - Web Savvy PR

Many head shots of people, with several selected=

Connecting With Your Audience

I was speaking with my one of my earliest social media strategy clients the other day. Her name is Melinda Emerson; she is a successful author and speaker, and along with her busy speaking and business consulting schedule, she recently landed a spot blogging for the New York Times http://boss.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/08/how-twitter-changed-my-life/. We were talking about the goals she had sketched out for herself in those early days before her bestselling book ?Become Your Own Boss in 12 Months? came out. The social media strategy I laid out for her, which started with creating her nickname SmallBizLady, turned into a success we could not have imagined. You can do the same?if you learn the skills you need, hone your online message and ?work it like a job.? Here are ten things non-fiction book authors can do before your book comes out.

1) Begin to Build an Online Platform, Before the Book Comes Out

The tips and steps below are some of the basic planks in that platform. Melinda had her book all ready to come out when it was postponed by one year Initially, She was not happy about the delay. No author wants to wait longer to have their book finally published, but as her online social media strategist, I was very happy. I remember her reaction to my statement, ?Melinda, you might not feel it right now, but this is the best thing that could happen to you.? She was not amused. I replied something along the lines of, ?Right now, no one really knows who you are, so why are they going to buy your book over someone else?s?? Let?s get you out there online and start working this social media stuff to get people to know who you are and what you bring to the table. (This also works if you are preparing for your second book to come out as well).

2) Know What Goals you are Trying to Reach

Melinda wanted to sell out her 1st printing of her book within the first year, which we did due to our early planning. First, we positioned her with a mission to ?End Small Business Failure.? Then she started providing good, quality information to small business owners on Twitter. Over time, we expanded to Facebook, LinkedIn & a blog. We worked to build a platform that helped her get more speaking gigs, secure business coaching clients, and land in major media publications. Two years later she even landed a spot writing for a major publication; which eventually led to her New York Times opportunity.

3) Set Up Short-term Goals

If your main or only goal is to make money writing non-fiction books ? that is probably a fantasy. Get clear about what you want your book to do for you. It is harder to do than you think to sell books, and to make money at it. But if your goal of publishing a non-fiction book is to sell books, and then leverage the authority to land media appearances, attract customers to your business, land paid speaking gigs, get paid writing or blogging opportunities, and to help people while you are doing it- those are doable goals. So sit down and scope out your short and longer term goals ? both realistic and?let yourself dream a little. I think she had writing for a big publication in her sites even in the early days.

4) Identify Who Your Ideal Audience Is

Too many people start out in social media without a plan or a strategy. Planning starts with who is most likely to buy your book, your services, bring you in on a speaking gig, or whatever goals your outlined above. There may be a primary ideal client, then a secondary group. Another of my clients is a succession planner ? he basically helps people sell their businesses. He kept using jargon terms in his blog posts and enewsletter, which his fortune 500 clients would understand. I asked one day how many of his clients are mom and pop, family-owned businesses. He said 25% or so. I asked, ?They don?t call it succession planning ? they want to know ?how to sell my business.?? He agreed, so we worked an occasional post or article targeted to this clientele and his sales increased. Put yourself in the mindset of your readers.

5a) Determine Where They Hang Out Online (and Craft Your Branding to Catch Their Eye)

We started Melinda on Twitter first. I knew that it was filled with small business owners of all types ? right in Melinda?s sweet spot. And we are both glad we did, as her branding came out of that first time we went on Twitter. She said, ?Cathy, what am I going to do? There are already two Melinda Emerson usernames out on Twitter.? I replied, don?t worry, we?ll find a username that tells them what you do.? We did a little brainstorming, and I said, ?How about @SmallBizLady?? Melinda said, ?I like it!.? She has said it was one of the best branding decision?s she made. It?s easy to remember, it says what she does and it has a ring to it. A few months later, I suggested starting a Twitter chat called #SmallBizChat (it?s kind of like an online talk show, but using tweets). The rest as they say is history. That chat helped position her as an expert, and gave her access to having other big names and authors on her chat. Melinda also moved on to use LinkedIn and Facebook. but we started with Twitter, because I identified that for her, it would be the easiest way to get her message to reach a broad segment of her audience the fastest.

5b) Don?t Forget to Network Offline, in Person (IRL ? in real life ? as they say) as Well

Attend conferences and mixers that your ideal customers or readers attend. Try and land speaking gigs ?as well. You can also attend and speak at conferences in your industry, this will help build your credibility with your peers. However, attending or speaking where your audience or clients are is key. Do both. Add your Twitter username to your name tag. Make it easy for people to connect with you?wherever they feel most comfortable. Once you have your book, negotiate to see if you can do back of the room sales.

Stay tuned, part two coming in a few days with tips number 6 to 10.

President Obama Visits Late Show, Weighs in on Mitt Romney "47 Percent" Controversy

President Barack Obama stopped by the Late Show With David Letterman last night, and had barely sat down before being asked about the Mitt Romney video.

The secretly-recorded-calling-Obama-backers-entitled-irresponsible-drains-on-society video, which Romney stands by, while acknowledging poor word choice.

Letterman asked Obama for his take on Mitt describing "47 percent of Americans" in this manner, to which he said, "One of the things I learned as president is you represent the entire country ... if you want to be president, you have to work for everyone."

Obama noted that in 2008, 47 percent of America voted for his rival, John McCain.

"This is a big country. And people disagree a lot, but one thing I've never tried to do and I think none of us can do in public office is suggest that because somebody doesn't agree with me that they're victims or they're unpatriotic," he said.

"There are not a lot of people out there who think they're victims. There are not a lot of people who think they're entitled to something."

"We've got some obligations to each other, and there's nothing wrong with us giving each other a helping hand so that that single mom's kid, after all the work she's done ... can afford to go to college, go cure the next disease, go start the next Google."

"I think that's a good investment for America."

Romney's comments ripple across battleground map

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Mitt Romney's off-handed comment that he doesn't worry about the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes has quickly entered the bloodstream in the presidential campaign's most hard-fought states.

His comment, in a video revealed this week, is prompting expressions of shock ? but also shrugs ? from Nevada to Florida to New Hampshire and the handful of battleground states in between.

Will it sway an election expected to be close?

There was much discussion in the relatively few states that are still considered competitive, likely to decide the race. Here, as elsewhere, the question was whether Romney was showing himself to be insensitive or merely delivering the hard truth a nation at an economic crossroads must face.

People's answers could make an Election Day difference in states where the race is tight.

"It sounds like he's leaving out half of America, if you ask me," said Gary Gabriel, an independent from suburban Columbus, Ohio, who decided in light of Romney's comments to support President Barack Obama.

But the remarks also reaffirmed the opinions of some Romney supporters.

"I worry a lot about the society we're turning into, more of an entitlement mentality," said Randy Schumaker, a Denver-area IT manager.

It all underscored the campaign's focus on the economy. And it stoked deeper questions about voters' expectations about the government's role in Americans' daily lives.

Outrage. Nodding approval. Both followed Romney's contention that 47 percent of Americans support Obama and that they "are dependent upon government" and "believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them."

In a Gallup poll taken Tuesday, about a third of the surveyed registered voters said they would be less likely to support Romney in light of the remarks, But more said the comments would not affect their votes. And most voters have already made up their minds on whom they will support, according to this and other surveys.

More voter voices:

"He does not have that empathy that says he really cares," said Michael Symes from the economically hard-hit Las Vegas area.

Student Morgan Palmer said he needs his college loan to get through Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. But he doesn't consider himself a government dependent. "I was really shocked," the 18-year-old freshman from Chantilly, Va., said. "This is a long-term investment, not short-term dependency."

Outside LaCrosse, Wis., however, retired mortgage loan officer Shirley Otto said Romney was merely delivering an unvarnished version of the straight talk the nation needs to hear.

"I'd rather be told the truth ... than be told something just to win an election," Otto said.

Romney's comments were recorded without his awareness at a private May fundraiser in Florida. They were provided to the magazine Mother Jones, which released them Monday.

By that evening, they had aired on evening news broadcasts in key battleground markets such as Denver and Milwaukee. By Tuesday morning, The Des Moines Register in Iowa and The Columbus Dispatch in Ohio featured front-page headlines about Romney's words.

They were the buzz outside a Joe Biden campaign rally in Ottumwa, Iowa, that morning, as they were at Phil Hopkins' paint store near, Columbus, Ohio. "It's kind of refreshing for someone to actually tell the truth for once," said Hopkins, an independent who supports Romney.

Unlike questions about diplomatic leadership that surfaced after deadly demonstrations at U.S. embassies in the past week, the attention over Romney's unguarded comments went to the heart of the presidential campaign's central issue, the economy, and the candidates' competing views of the government's role in the lives of millions of Americans out of work and living in financial uncertainty.

Romney, a wealthy former businessman who served a term as Massachusetts governor, neither disavowed nor apologized for the comments. He has said Obama has fueled government dependence, and he's now drawing attention to 1998 statements Obama made about redistribution of government resources, seeking to paint him as an enemy of the free-market solutions Romney prescribes.

On Wednesday, Romney said during a fundraiser in Atlanta that economic success "does not work by a government saying, 'Become dependent upon government.'"

Romney has been retooling his campaign message amid pressure from his own party to push more aggressively against Obama. He's asking Obama supporters from 2004 to back him instead.

And while Obama and Biden's public comments were muted on Romney's remarks, that didn't stop their campaign from quickly producing a Web video featuring people reacting negatively. Obama has argued throughout his term and during the campaign that the federal government must expand access to health care and ease college loan and mortgage repayment to allow more Americans to enter the middle class.

By Wednesday morning, a pro-Obama group had produced a television ad using excerpts of the Romney video, and was scheduled to begin airing it in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin by the week's end.

As proof of what Democrats saw as the potential impact of Romney's comments, candidates for Congress in hotly contested races began immediately trying to tie their Republican opponents to them. In Florida, Democrat Lois Frankel sent out an email fundraising solicitation linking Romney's comments to her opponent Kristin Jacobs, who is Romney's Florida campaign co-chairman.

In Colorado, Democratic Rep. Ed Perlmutter excavated a months-old quip about food stamp recipients by Republican opponent Joe Coors and used it to try tying him to Romney.

Reserving the spotlight on the issue for his appearance Tuesday on CBS's The Late Show, Obama lightly questioned whether Romney had the sensitivity to be president. "You have to work for everyone, not just for some," Obama told host David Letterman during the show's taping.

95% Searching for Sugar Man

All Critics (80) | Top Critics (27) | Fresh (76) | Rotten (4)

[A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

Beautiful and revelatory, Searching for Sugar Man also incorporates huge chunks of Rodriguez's music.

Two fans, Stephen Segerman and Craig Bertholomew, made it their business to find out exactly what happened to the singer Rodriguez. And, "Searching for Sugar Man" is the fruits of their labor. The fruit is tasting pretty sweet.

It starts as a bittersweet parable about the cruelty of commerce, but the wonder of "Searching for Sugar Man" will not soon slip away.

You watch "Searching for Sugar Man" at first fascinated by the mystery - what happened to Rodriguez? Where did he go? Then you become infuriated by its revelations of financial injustice.

An unexpectedly fresh nonfiction tale that rustles up deep feelings of a life stolen -- part docu-mystery, part uplifting valentine about the universality and resonating power of music.

Generates immediate interest in a forgotten artist, permitting the delicate yet barbed tunes to guide the experience, returning a sense of excitement to a man who unfortunately missed out on the highlights of his career.

It isn't that Searching for Sugar Man's plot developments are gotcha!-like, but this documentary does boast some bowl-you-over reveals best experienced blind.

Ultimately, for Rodriguez, musical redemption transcends the greed and soul-sapping breaks he encountered.

Rodriguez's life story is only part of what makes "Searching for Sugar Man" such a revelation.

The man and his music are worth checking out, even if the movie is not.

Ultimately an ode to Rodriguez's artistic modesty and the power of his music-a rousing crowd-pleaser that asks you to save questions for another film.

A rousing and all-encompassing look at a man who becomes even more of a mystery after we've gotten to know him.

An inspirational, spiritual experience which illustrates how the purity of soul required to produce the finest works is not dependent on material gain.

Family Guy and more Twentieth Century Fox content heading to Google Play

Android Central

How have we ever coped until now, without being able to get our Family Guy fix in Google Play? Well, that's all about to change, as today Google has announced that Family Guy, along with 600 other Twentieth Century Fox titles, will be coming to the Play Store sometime soon.

It isn't just limited to content you may have already seen either. As of today, you can buy Prometheus from Google Play, in HD, a full three weeks before the general release date. Over the coming weeks we're also promised such titles as X-Men, Ice Age and Black Swan, alongside TV shows such as Modern Family, Glee and New Girl. Say what you will, but these are some popular titles and their presence in the Play Store is more than welcome.

Initially -- and unsurprisingly -- these titles will initially only be available in the United States. Google has promised that they are working to bring them to other countries soon. They also made the point that they're now working with all six major studios and many independent studios to bring us the content we so desire.
